Serenade for Solo Tuba (1973)was written one afternoon as I tried out the two new tubas purchased for the college band I conducted in Bethlehem, PA. Each movement focuses on one or two techniques, encompassing the relative playing range of the instrument. Alter the tempo to faster for the fast movements, and slower for the slow movements to increase skill and technical control of fingers, tongue, and breath.

Vanishing Points of Light (1995) for Tuba and Piano was written as an experiment in “stretching a tonality” in unusual ways. The two parts interact as if in dialogue, giving each material to bounce and ricochet off each other. There are lots of accidentals to tame in this piece, with lots of three-part counterpoint passages.
