Description
Reflections (1996) for Five Pianos and an Organ, was written to celebrate the hundred-year anniversary of a church, currently occupied by St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Springfield, IL. There were five pianos placed in various spaces of the three- story-building and an organ in the sanctuary. I was given the task to compose this work. I finally decided to make canonic entrances by the instruments starting with my own bass line. Each entry plays the bass line then moves on to the next eight-bar melody. Ten entrances in all. Then there is a quasi-development section which “swings” into the last statement of the whole tune with syncopated jazz lines and riffs.
